“Design excellence unites the tangible with non-tangible to represent a unique place and time.” — Amy Alper, Amy A Alper Architect
Amy Alper’s architectural journey began from the vantage of bus rides to school in her hometown of San Francisco. Gazing out the window, she was enthralled by the forms of the city. Curiosity led to her intrigue with an art form that embodies both the practical and sublime — a lifelong passion that has not waned.
Alper pursued her undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, followed by an immersive architectural history program in Florence, Italy, where lessons of proportion, scale, and light set the foundation for future studies. A formative period in New York exposed her to the pulse of contemporary architectural discourse through lectures, exhibitions, and the encompassing urban experience. Her formal education culminated at UCLA, studying under such luminaries as Richard Meier, Frank Gehry, and Franklin D. Israel. Each emphasized that the experience of architecture starts with the approach to a building and the composition seen from that approach. Equally important lessons delved into the movement between and through interior space. Alper also sees architecture as a dynamic experience, fully realized when punctuated and defined by light.
