Thomas Shafer — Architects
“Architecture is a process, a refinement of an idea through many phases of design work.”— Thomas Shafer, Architect - Shafer Crowe Kueck | Architecture + Design
The second pavilion houses the primary suite which is slightly elevated to follow the natural slope of the land, whereas the third pavilion is dedicated to guest accommodations — spaces to lounge, daydream, or retreat for rest — and houses a fitness area that opens directly to a midnight blue swimming pool.
The material palette plays a key role in establishing the home’s ambience. Opposites attract: Brazilian walnut flooring and mahogany millwork add warmth whereas soft Venetian plaster walls and delicate mosaic tiles provide a lightness, both in contrast with the bold, insitu architectural concrete fireplace wall, the grounding element which anchors the house. Vibrant splashes of color — a striking entry door, structural columns, and other accent pieces — provide an unexpected electricity.
Sustainability is also a key consideration in the firm’s designs. Many behind-the-scenes initiatives, including a geothermal heating and cooling system, highperformance double-glazed windows, and an advanced insulation system, work to ensure energy efficiency and comfort while maintaining the simplicity and beauty of the home. These sustainable elements reflect SCK | Architecture + Design’s commitment to their responsible, forward-thinking work.
“Grounded in Modernism” is a home where the connection between the architecture, the landscape, and the people who inhabit it, can be deeply appreciated. It is within this environment that a powerful yet gentle balance of architectural elegance exists.
