Todd Gordon Mather — Architect

“Timelessness, simplicity, and beauty in the architectural form can only come when one honors the constraints of the natural environment and needs of a site, leaning into them rather than pushing up against them.”

Todd Gordon Mather, architect

As with most homes, automobile access is seminal but even more so in snow country. The driveway is carefully draped down the hillside at an appropriate slope and an auto courtyard addresses the process of both parking and accessing the home. From here, the procession into the home takes place in three locations: two via garages with one of those extending through an enclosed bridge structure, and across the main entry’s covered bridge, which is accented by a clever water feature.

With the primary suite on the north end of the home, moving to and from it allows one to experience the grandest space in the home: the vaulted great room. The kitchen and its subordinate butler’s pantry is tucked behind the dining room and away from the large windows and doors facing west, but when standing and working in the kitchen still offers views across the low-slung dining room to Mount Timpanogos beyond.

The most unexpected space is found under the mudroom, where excavation revealed a small but cavernous crawl space. Now a hidden door in a beautifully decorated panel wall leads to a golf simulator room, where swings may be scrutinized and improved upon through the long winter months.
