“I strive to make each project a ‘retreat’ from the habitual demands of society — a sacred place for our clients to call home — with a strong connection to the natural environment.”
Each new home is ultimately a disruption to the natural environment, so the stakes are always high going into a new project. “Side x Side Retreat” is technically two separate neighboring homes, and while each is unique they are complementary in proportion and layout. The lot size was quite narrow and small, which created the opportunity for a unique design solution and overall plan layout.
Because the home functions as a weekend destination, low-maintenance materials were essential. Native limestone walls and durable metal walls and roof panels are the primary materials found on the home. At the interior, stone and concrete floors provide resilience for guests. The owners requested efficiency of space and an emphasis on privacy between each home, while allowing for the option of social interaction between each home when desired. In working at this site, the adjacent lake and hillside beyond provided an amazing opportunity for a strong interior-exterior connection, mirroring the connection from each home to each other.
