Thomas Birkman— Interior Designer
“Some spaces appear fully formed in your mind, where others need some time to marinade—the creative process is unique. In design you are presented with a set of problems, which not only do you need to solve, but for which you also need to introduce the aesthetic component… this requires a process of refinement to reach. Seldom do we have the luxury of designing a room that’s purely pretty with no determination of venue or prescribed function. All spaces have a function.”
— Thomas Birkman, interior designer
Thomas’ design process is certainly not formulaic. In fact, he likens moments of design enlightenment to a movie when two people meet and their lives flash before their eyes; that’s the same feeling he’s struck with when the total rush of inspiration and creativity hit all at once upon entering a space that needs his eye.
“I find that if you listen to the house or space in particular, it will tell you exactly what it wants to be when it grows up.” His approach is best defined by looking at the sum of the parts and determining what’s best for his clients needs, as well as the nature and style of the home. His ultimate goal is to create environments that are beautiful and easy to live in. I like them to be approachable in the sense that nothing is too precious. That they feel inviting. A place to put your feet up and enjoy friends and family.”
From space planning to arcitectual design, Birkman Interiors’ diverse portfolio of work is featured throughout Los Angeles, New York City, Sun Valley, the Bahamas and the great Bluegrass state.
