Greg Faulkner — Architect

“When it comes to collaborating with clients, the connection is almost on an unspoken level. We spend the time together necessary to observe, understand, and associate with their energy, patterns, and existing way of life.”

Greg Faulkner, architect

The project site is sandwiched among several houses, which created a very tight building envelope surrounded by neighbors, necessitating a plan built to the setback lines to the east and south and internally focused.

Despite the challenging conditions, Faulkner and his team designed a stunning 3,800-square-foot dwelling with four sleeping rooms, a gathering space, garage, and private outdoor spaces. The material palette is derived from the surrounding context of basalt boulders and Sugar Pines that cover the forest floor with a mat of rustcolored pine needles.

The glass-walled sleeping areas wrap a private courtyard, while the family gathering space is a south-facing concrete pavilion that connects the courtyard to the distant view beyond. A thin steel shed roof pitches up to open the interior to the southern sun and views to ski runs on the mountain.

Moreover, a forest fire came within 25 miles of the site recently, so the building materials are robust and nonflammable, including concrete walls and a steel roof and aggregate covered with a fire-rated membrane combined with laminated steel sash glazing to form a fire-resistive shell. The end result is a safe and spacious home that offers privacy, comfort, spaces to connect, and unrivaled views of stunning natural beauty.
