Antonina Markoff & Bruce Fullerton — Architect

“We believe that connection to a place, being part of the place, preserving that place, is fundamental.”

The client wanted to incorporate some level outdoor spaces. Excavated fill was used to create fescue-planted lawns off the kitchen and at the upper level between the house and the pool; the garage is buried underground with more fescue and trees above it. Mostly, the site’s original sloping topography remains.

The upper floor has a small footprint which allows three roof decks over the main level. These roof decks, their edges blurred by surrounding planters and green roofs, floating above but still appearing connected to the surrounding landscape, ended up becoming favorite places for the clients.

Wood is the main material used, most of it reclaimed with characterful grain and texture. Cedar siding and custom Douglas fir windows and sliding doors are complemented by stone patios and native and droughttolerant landscaping. Inside, reclaimed teak cabinets, floors, and stairs are offset by concrete tiles and copper details. Hand-made and locally sourced reclaimed bay laurel wood slabs are integrated into countertops and furniture, their live-edge curves bringing nature inside.
