Morris Adjmi — Architect
“I believe in creating comfortable and welcoming spaces informed by the user’s personality and style — whether that’s one specific client in the case of a private residence, or the preferences of a broader population in the case of a multifamily building.”
One of MA’s most notable recent projects is the Austin Nichols Penthouse in Brooklyn, New York. In 2016, MA transformed the Austin Nichols House, a circa 1915 concrete warehouse, into a luxury multifamily building with unobstructed views of Manhattan across the East River. Several years later, Adjmi and his team were called upon to provide a full interior fit-out of one of its expansive penthouse units.
“The client’s objective for the project was to create a family-friendly pied-à-terre — a chic, urban respite for family and friends to come together,” Adjmi said.
MA transformed the three-bedroom, four-bathroom unit into a modern and masculine home. At 2,400 square feet, the dwelling boasts dark woods and natural stone that add depth and richness to the post-industrial building’s inherent concrete, glass, and steel elements.
One of the penthouse’s unique design features is a folding wall system installed across its entire western façade, which maximizes indoor-outdoor living during warmer months. Along this elevation, a double-sided fireplace can be enjoyed from the terrace and living room.“
We knew we had to find a way to take full advantage of the home’s amazing unobstructed views of Manhattan,” Adjmi said. “It’s a rare and exciting experience to be able to enjoy the skyline so intimately.”
