Mell Lawrence — Architect

“How do you move through the spaces that frame your days? This is one of the first questions we explore in pursuit of an architecture that supports the client’s lifestyle and rhythms.”

Mell Lawrence, architect

Upstairs, the perimeter wood window wall connects interiors to the tree canopy, sky, and distant views of the downtown skyline. The entire western-facing end is devoted to a 15-foot-deep screened porch looking out over the treetops. This porch is placed not only to take in the hillside garden views but also to buffer the conditioned upstairs from the western sun.

The whole house is designed to take advantage of natural ventilation. Strategic openings enable a constant flow of air through the entire house, creating the ability to limit air conditioning even in the warmer months — a true Texas miracle.
