Mary Ann Gabriele Schicketanz — Architect

“When we have the privilege to work in a pristine location, the building needs to subordinate itself to the landscape. Every design decision is then informed by that subordination.”

Mary Ann Gabriele Schicketanz, architect

Schicketanz has long put sustainability at the forefront of her buildings, and this is no exception. It won a California Home + Design Sustainable Award in 2022, and every aspect was carefully planned to help get the home to net zero. Electricity and hot water are generated with solar panels and then stored in Tesla Power Walls, ready to cover all the power needs for the house as well as for charging two electric vehicles. Water is supplied to a well, and all water is treated and redistributed onsite. Even the reclaimed oak used for the ceiling was selected knowing that it is the local area’s most abundant tree.

Though a palette of neutrals lets the incredible ocean and mountain views, plus ethereal moon rises, be the star, there are pops of color strategically placed throughout the interior. A custom kitchen backsplash in shimmering raspberry tile from Bisazza was inspired by the Mark Rothko painting White Center. Ultimately, the sense of indoor-outdoor is so strong that even a day spent entirely within the home’s walls feels as free as if you were wandering through wildflowers down to the waves.
