Christy Blumenfield — Architect
"Art and business may make strange bedfellows, but crafting a personal, not merely professional, relationship with my clients is essential to a rewarding outcome. Friends build the best homes.”
— Christy Blumenfield, architect
The spacious home was designed with enough room to comfortably host at least 20 members of the family at all times — even though its “day job” was as a residence for two. With such a variety of functional considerations, the home is a wonderful example of form following function. Blumenfeld believes that what is created around function becomes the inspiration to inform the form. “That’s the work,” she says.
Natural white oak beams were selected to evoke a sense of warmth and history, and wide-plank floors provided an inviting, rather than formal, arrival. Perhaps the most significant design element of the exterior is the roof, which is comprised of reclaimed slate from Europe; the variety of colours and tones give the new home an immediate sense of heritage and tradition.
