A Note on Culture — Lately: August 2026

I believe deeply in people’s dreams. In many ways, dreams are where every beautiful book begins. And I also believe there is something extraordinary about the journey between imagining something and devoting oneself to learning how to do it beautifully.

What we have built at benton buckley books did not happen overnight. It grew from thirty years of learning this industry from every angle — doing the work, believing deeply in vision and language, making mistakes, failing fast, learning faster, listening, evolving, questioning, remaining endlessly curious, practicing patience, nurturing relationships, and discovering, again and again, that publishing is at once creative, analytical, and hopeful — and, above all, a profound responsibility that must be met with integrity.

And somewhere along the way, it became much larger than me.

Today, benton buckley books supports the lives and livelihoods of seven extraordinary employees, alongside a constellation of writers, editors, designers, photographers, printers, and freelance creatives with whom I have built relationships spanning decades. Each brings something irreplaceable to the table — an eye, a voice, a sensibility, a craft refined through years of devotion. And, because everything is personal, many of those relationships have become genuine friendships.

I have always believed that all boats can rise together. There is room for more beauty, more ideas, more voices, and more people brave enough to imagine something that does not yet exist. Another person’s light does not diminish our own — it makes the world brighter.

I think the most beautiful creative communities are built upon something deeper than opportunity. They are built upon mutual adoration and reverence — for one another, certainly, but also for the work itself. For what each person has learned. For the miles travelled before our paths happened to meet. For the gifts another person possesses that we may never possess ourselves.

That is where confidence and humility become companions.

Thirty years in publishing has not taught me that I know everything. Quite beautifully, it has taught me how much there will always be to learn. Confidence is simply knowing what experience has given me, surrounding myself with brilliant people who know things I do not, and trusting the collective wisdom we have earned through years of doing the work.

Perhaps that is what I love most about making books. A book may begin with one person’s dream, but it becomes something greater through many hands, many minds, and many hearts. One person imagines. Another sees. Another shapes. Another questions. Another makes possible what yesterday existed only as an idea.

And then, together, we rise.

Of course, I have learned that rising together also means being willing to fall together. To stay together through the ebbs and flows, the rises and the falls, the successes and the failures — to fail fast, learn faster, and remain beside one another through all of it. Perhaps it is in the in-between of those moments — neither at the summit nor at the bottom, but somewhere along the climb — that we become most connected.

And isn’t connection the point?

That is what benton buckley books is — and what I believe it must continue to be. A place where experience and possibility meet, where we honour what has been learned while remaining curious about what has yet to be discovered, and where the dreams of one are made greater by the gifts of many.

We rise. We fall. We learn. We create. And, most importantly, we stay connected.

Cheers,
Beth
