Behind the Press — A First Look at the Making of “Women of Architecture”
The printing press has its own language.
The steady rhythm of sheets racing through massive presses. The shimmer of fresh foil catching the light. Thread binding signatures into permanence. Stacks of finished cases waiting patiently for the pages they were made to protect. It is a remarkable process that few readers ever have the opportunity to witness.
Recently, our overseas printing partner shared a series of videos and photographs documenting the production of Women of Architecture: a collective of unique voices, offering us an intimate look behind the scenes as the book moved through the bindery. Watching a title come to life this way never loses its fascination.
Every stage serves a purpose.
Large printed sheets emerge from the press before being folded into precise signatures. Those signatures are gathered, sewn together with thread — a hallmark of fine bookmaking that creates exceptional durability — and trimmed into what is known as the book block. Nearby, the cases receive their foil-stamped titles, each impression applied with exacting precision before the finished covers are prepared to meet the sewn pages.
The final step is known as casing-in — the moment the book block is joined to its cover. One by one, the individual components become a finished volume, ready for final inspection before beginning its journey across the ocean.
While readers often experience only the finished book, we find equal beauty in everything that happens beforehand. Seeing stacks of freshly stamped covers, sewn interiors awaiting their cases, and completed books moving down the production line is a reminder that fine publishing remains a craft built on extraordinary skill, patience, and precision.
