Sustainability & Resiliency in Residential Architecture — bbb at the AIA Conference
At benton buckley books, we have always believed architecture is far more than shelter. It is a reflection of humanity itself — of how we gather, adapt, endure, dream, and define our relationship to the world around us. The spaces we create become emotional landscapes, cultural artifacts, and lasting expressions of human intention. And increasingly, they are also becoming acts of environmental responsibility.
We are honored to join the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2026 in San Diego on June 10th through a special session titled Sustainability & Resiliency in Residential Architecture.
Featuring architects Michael Holliday, FAIA, LEED AP, Mary Ann Schicketanz, and Neal J.Z. Schwartz, FAIA — all featured in New View California — and moderated by our Founder & Creative Director, Beth Buckley, the session will explore how residential architecture across California is responding thoughtfully to wildfire, drought, seismic conditions, extreme heat, and evolving environmental realities.
For us, this conversation feels deeply aligned with the philosophy that has always guided our work as publishers.
At benton buckley books, we are drawn to architecture that does more than impress visually. We are interested in spaces that feel rooted — homes that respond to their surroundings with intelligence, sensitivity, and restraint. Projects that understand beauty and responsibility are not opposing forces, but natural collaborators.
Across California, architects are navigating increasingly complex environmental conditions while continuing to create homes that feel warm, livable, emotionally resonant, and deeply connected to place. What emerges from that challenge is not compromise, but evolution — a new architectural language shaped by resilience, sustainability, and thoughtful adaptation.
The upcoming AIA session will examine built residential projects informed directly by the realities of their environments, offering insight into how climate-responsive thinking can shape both functional performance and architectural expression.
Moderating the session is Beth Buckley, whose approach to conversation mirrors the philosophy behind our books. Equal parts perceptive and deeply sincere, Beth has long believed that meaningful dialogue emerges not from performance, but from attentiveness — creating space for ideas, perspectives, and shared understanding to unfold naturally.
“Architecture has always reflected the world around us,” Beth shares. “Now, it must respond to it with equal thoughtfulness, care, and imagination.”
As publishers, participating in this conversation represents something larger than a conference appearance. It reflects our continued commitment to elevating the voices shaping the future of architecture and design — voices grounded not only in innovation and aesthetics, but in stewardship, humanity, and long-term vision.
We look forward to joining the broader architectural community in San Diego this June for what promises to be an inspiring and deeply relevant dialogue.
